Teacher recruitment and retention plans; salary increase for all employees


The Lafayette Parish School Board approved a 2% wage increase for all employees with an additional 4.7% wage increase for craft and trade professionals (e.g., custodians, clerks cafeteria, electricians, plumbers), according to a spokesperson for the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS).

The board also approved a proposal to attract and retain teachers at the following 12 schools:

● Dr. Raphael A. Baranco Elementary School

● JW Faulk Elementary School

● Alice Boucher Primary School

● Lafayette College

● Acadian Middle School

● Carencro High School

● Northside High School

● Lerosen Preparatory School

● Evangeline Elementary School

● SJ Montgomery Elementary School

● Carencro College

● Paul Breaux College

Three proposals were approved at the meeting, with two stipends being paid in one lump sum. They are:

● A recruiting allowance of $5,000 to be paid in a lump sum to attract new teachers to the district to teach in one of the identified schools. This also applies to teachers transferred to a
of the 12 schools.

● A $5,000 return stipend to be paid in one lump sum to existing teachers returning to an identified school.

● A retention allowance of $4,000 for any returning, transferred, or newly hired teachers to remain at these schools, paid over two years, based on attendance

A qualified teacher may be eligible for multiple allowances for a combined net effect of $9,000. Certain eligibility conditions must be met. These are one-time stipends that would begin in the 2022-2023 school year. All details can be viewed here.

“Along with other school districts across the country, LPSS is focused on attracting and retaining talented teachers to serve our students,” Superintendent Irma Trosclair said. “We are very grateful to the board for recognizing the need and approving these allocations to help us in our efforts. When evaluating the data, the schools identified have the highest turnover rate compared to others schools in the district and this is something we need to address.. We know that the foundation of education begins with our teachers.This incentive is necessary for our students to achieve academic growth.

LPSS will host a job fair on April 9, 2022 at the David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy starting at 9:00 a.m. at noon.
