Manchester United are keen on Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka, who as it stands will be available on a free transfer in 2022.
The Red Devils are closely monitoring the German international’s contract situation in Bavaria, with a current standoff between him and Bayern bosses.
The midfielder has played a crucial role in Bayern’s success in recent years, especially their 2019-20 Champions League triumph.
But the 26-year-old, who joined Bayern from Schalke as a free agent in 2018, has less than 12 months on his contract, which is the original deal he signed when he arrived at the Allianz Arena.
As first reported by Bild sportsman, Bayern are now at an impasse with Goretzka and his midfielder partner Joshua Kimmich on new terms – although the latter’s deal runs until 2023.
Earlier this week, new Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann spoke about how important Goretzka will be by his side in 2021-2022 and his desire to sort out his future.
He told Sky Sport in Germany: “Yes, he’s ready for FC Bayern, he’s ready for the team. I think it shows in the way he plays. It is also quite normal for a player to always think about his future.
“We all want him to stay here, he’s an exceptional player who, with his goal threat, is certainly one of the most dangerous players in the Bundesliga, and also one of the most dangerous midfielders Europe and for me he is the cornerstone of the team.
Amid these words from the Bayern head coach, Goretzka and his representatives now want him to be paid as such.
However, in the manner of the recently deceased defender David Alaba 12 months ago, talks have become complicated, especially after the player changed agents, having linked up with Thomas Kroth after Jorg’s retirement. Neubauer.
The main sticking point is Goretzka’s demands, a desire to be propelled among Bayern’s top earners, rather than financial problems speculated at the club; the German champions are extremely well managed and remain in a very healthy financial situation.
But Bayern are strict on their salary limits, with Robert Lewandowski in the lead, and Goretzka’s representatives are asking for £ 17million. That’s well above Bayern’s latest £ 10million offer, while new CEO Oliver Kahn is said to be wary of propelling Goretzka close to par with Lewandowski, given he only started 26 of their 50 games last season (32 appearances in total).
Die Roten bosses are also aware that Kimmich’s advisers will be watching closely and almost certainly asking for parity – at a minimum – for the player billed as Manuel Neuer’s successor as club captain.
As such, Goretzka, who will be just 27 next February and theoretically approaching his peak years, could leave Bayern for nothing, and the European elite are going in circles.
United are at the head of the fans, who first watched the player during his time at Schalke, and who may well see the action star as the perfect replacement for Paul Pogba, amid his own contract situation at Old. Trafford.

United are claimed to have made a “concrete offer” which would give Goretzka the hefty pay raise he is seeking.
However, it is understood that no offer has been made to the player’s side yet and United are reluctant to be used.
But there is certainly interest in a player who, if his situation at Bayern is not resolved, will not be short of offers from the big hitters in Europe.
