The recent announcement of 18 community batteries in Perth and Bunbury, Western Australia, is a significant step towards a more sustainable energy future. However, it raises a deeper question: is this enough, or do we need a more comprehensive approach to renewable energy adoption? Personally, I think the call for a legislated target for renewable energy uptake is a crucial aspect that has been overlooked. While the community batteries are a welcome development, they only scratch the surface of what is needed to truly electrify Western Australia. What makes this particularly fascinating is the potential for these batteries to stabilize electricity prices and improve grid stability, but it is a temporary solution. In my opinion, the state needs a long-term commitment to renewable energy targets to ensure a reliable and secure energy system. The falling price of energy storage has indeed prompted a surge in battery installations globally, and Australia is no exception. However, the country's energy storage market is still in its infancy compared to China and the United States. Australia is the third-largest energy storage market in the world, but this is largely due to the state's recent push towards renewable energy. What many people don't realize is that the state's current battery capacity is only enough to meet about 50% of the state's average power demand, and it is not a sustainable solution. If you take a step back and think about it, the state needs a more robust and comprehensive approach to renewable energy adoption. The state government's plans to introduce renewable energy targets (RETs) for 2035 and beyond are a step in the right direction, but they are not enough. The state needs to lock this momentum into a long-term commitment, and start implementing targets much earlier. The batteries being rolled out in Bunbury and Perth are a great start, but they are just the beginning. The state needs to continue investing in cleaner energy and batteries, and also focus on educating the public about the benefits of renewable energy. In conclusion, while the community batteries are a welcome development, they are not a comprehensive solution. The state needs a legislated target for renewable energy uptake to ensure a reliable and secure energy system for the future. This is a call to action for the state government to take a more proactive approach to renewable energy adoption and truly electrify Western Australia.
