Alabama high school golf has once again showcased the state's athletic prowess, with a range of exciting competitions and impressive performances. The 78th Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) State Golf Championships took place at Mobile's Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove golf course, attracting top talent from across the state. The event was a spectacle of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship, with teams and individuals vying for state titles and individual accolades.
One of the standout performances came from Vestavia Hills, which claimed its second straight and seventh overall Class 7A state title. The Rebels' dominance was evident as they shot a 6-under par 282 team total in the final round, outperforming rival Hoover by a substantial 19 shots. Clarke Brown, a senior at Vestavia, finished with a 5-under 67, securing low medalist honors and a total of 12-under 132.
The girls' competition was equally as captivating. Alabama Christian senior Julie Waldo emerged victorious, winning her third consecutive championship with a two-day score of 67-69 (136) at Dothan's Highland Oaks. Waldo's performance was remarkable, tying Saxon Skinner of Tuscaloosa Academy and Frances Brown of UMS-Wright for the third-best 36-hole score in AHSAA tournament history. This achievement underscores her exceptional talent and consistency.
In the Class 6A boys' competition, Mountain Brook secured its first state championship since 2022 and 11th overall with a two-day score of 514, which was 32 strokes under par. The Spartans' success was led by S.J. Thomas, who finished with a 12-under 132 total, and Denton Brooks, who was just a stroke behind with a two-day 133. Homewood's Jack Lowery also made a strong showing, finishing third with a 139.
Scottsboro emerged as the Class 5A boys' champion, winning the title with a 313-327 (640) total at Glencoe's RTJ Silver Lakes Golf Course. The team's victory was hard-fought, with Bayside Academy finishing second with a 644 total. Guntersville took third place with a 671, and Andalusia finished fourth with a 705.
Brooks High School ended Haleyville's four-year winning streak in the Class 4A boys' competition, claiming the state championship with a 313-324 (637) team total. Only seven strokes separated the top four teams, with American Christian finishing second, Houston Academy in third, and Haleyville in fourth.
Montgomery Academy secured the Class 3A boys' title, winning the team state championship at the RTJ Highland Oaks Course. Boone Thigpen of Rogers claimed the individual title with a 1-under 143 total, while Montgomery Academy's consistent performance with rounds of 312 and 313 earned them the team victory.
The Class 1A/2A boys' competition was won by Lindsay Lane, who finished with a 308-316 (624) total. Elba took second place with a 322-330 (652), while Mars Hill Bible finished third with a 330-331 (661) total. Sumiton Christian secured fourth place with a 331-344 (675) total.
In the girls' Class 7A competition, Grissom rallied with a 228 team score to claim the state title at Mobile's Magnolia Grove. Klare Jamison of Grissom led the way, securing low medalist honors with a 2-under-par 70 on the second day, for a two-day total of 137. Hewitt-Trussville's Merritt Daniel finished second with a two-day 142.
Spanish Fort emerged as the Class 6A girls' champion, winning the title with a 444 total. The Toros' success was led by Sara Carter-Hare, who fired back-to-back rounds of 69 to claim low medalist honors with a 138 total. Pike Road took second place with a 463, Mountain Brook finished third with a 467, and Fort Payne was fourth with a 503.
West Point secured the Class 4A/5A girls' championship, winning the title with a 241-241 (482) total at Glencoe's RTJ Silver Lakes Golf Course. West Point's Brooklyn Sutter finished as low medalist with a 3-over 75, leading her team to victory. West Point's identical rounds of 241 earned them the state title, two strokes ahead of defending state champion Tuscaloosa Academy.
Pike Liberal Arts of Troy claimed the Class 1A/3A girls' title for the first time in school history, finishing with a 284 total and a two-day total of 577 at Dothan's Highland Oaks Golf Course. Altamont finished just two shots behind in second place with a 579 total. Avery Green of Pike Liberal Arts led the way, finishing fifth with a 173.
These championships not only celebrate athletic excellence but also foster a sense of community and sportsmanship among Alabama's high school athletes.
